The enzyme is involved in the breakdown of milk sugar — lactose. The substitution polymorphism 13910 (T for C) determines lactose intolerance in children over one and a half years old; it leads to a significant decrease in bone mass and a 2-5-fold increase in the risk of fractures in elderly people.
