WHO experts consider metabolic syndrome (MS) a new pandemic of the 21st century affecting industrialized countries. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is twice as high as diabetes mellitus, and its growth rate is expected to increase by 50% in the next 25 years. According to modern concepts, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of hormonal and metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and diabetes mellitus. The development of metabolic syndrome is determined by a complex interaction of hereditary and environmental risk factors. The most important environmental factors contributing to the development of metabolic syndrome are the excessive consumption of food containing fats and sugars and low physical activity leading to overweight and obesity.
According to WHO, about 30% of the world's population is overweight. Obese people are 50% more likely to develop hypertension than people with normal body weight. A number of studies have found a direct proportional relationship between the body weight and the overall mortality ‒ it has been established that with weight gain, cardiovascular diseases boost, including the risk of coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, sudden death and stroke. In addition, 1st degree obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes three-fold; in the case of 2nd degree obesity ‒ by 5 times; and 3rd degree obesity ‒ by 10 times.
It is important to note that the majority of patients with metabolic syndrome are people of active working age constituting the most productive and significant layer of society. In addition, over the past two decades, the syndrome under study has demonstrated a steady increase among young people and children.
The most important thing in the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome is proper nutrition, increased physical activity, giving up bad habits, i.e. the formation of a healthy lifestyle. The effectiveness of such measures has been proven by numerous international study results. The identification of allelic gene variants that determine the increased genetic risk of metabolic syndrome development will make it possible to implement effective preventive measures for this disease, as well as correctly choose the methods of its treatment, significantly improve its prognosis and avoid possible side effects.
