Melanocortin is a polypeptide with hormonal activity, which is produced in pituitary gland and acts as a satiety signal. Changes in the sequence of the gene encoding the melanocortin 4 receptor lead to the body not receiving a signal of sufficient energy accumulation, and, as a result, a need for more frequent food intake arises.
