The presence of the C allele increases the risk of CVD development in the case where there are such risk factors as diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia etc., and it also contributes to atherosclerosis progression.
VEGF plays a central role in the formation of new and the survival of immature blood vessels, thereby improving muscle blood flow and promoting an increase in muscle growth after exercise. The C allele is associated with better exercise performance: a greater increase in maximal oxygen uptake in response to aerobic exercise.
